Feeling Sick?

Is it the cold, seasonal flu or H1N1 flu?

Confused about the difference between a cold (caused by one of hundreds of rhinoviruses) and the flu (caused by seasonal influenza viruses or the novel H1N1 virus)? You’re not alone. With all the information being provided by the media, it’s easy to get confused, and even worried, about your symptoms.

According to the CDC, H1N1 symptoms are similar to seasonal flu, but symptoms are typically more severe. H1N1 symptoms can also include vomiting and diarrhea. The common cold, on the other hand, has more differences than similarities to the flu.

As of November 2009, most of the flu cases reported have been H1N1 flu. The H1N1 virus has been present this past summer and now in the fall. Usually seasonal influenza does not begin until late December, with peaks during the winter months.

The following chart shows the difference between the cold and flu (seasonal and H1N1).
