Lombardi, MedStar Open Breast Health Clinic in SE DC

October 23, 2003

Lombardi and MedStar have teamed to open a breast health clinic in southeast Washington, one of the most medically underserved areas in the nation. The clinic was made possible by the Avon Foundation, which provided $1 million in funding to open the center.

Jeanne Mandelblatt“Washington has the worst breast cancer incidence and mortality in the nation, and African American women are disproportionately affected,” said Jeanne Mandelblatt (left), professor of medicine at Lombardi and director of the center. “In opening our doors to a neighborhood desperate for accessible care, we have great potential to improve breast health services for all of Washington’s women.”

The center, which is now taking patients, provides:

  • comprehensive health exams and family history reviews
  • education on how to give self breast exams
  • one-on-one meetings with health educators
  • mammography at Washington Hospital Center (with parking or taxi vouchers provided)

If a woman’s mammogram comes back with reason for concern, the Lombardi/MedStar team is providing health “navigators” to help women get access to specialists, clinical trials, and all the treatment services they need. Uninsured women are enrolled on the spot for Project Wish, which covers their mammography, so any woman can use the center as a resource. The center, open daily and one Saturday a month, is at 650 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, and is hoping to bring in about 30 women a day.
