Dr. Sherrie Wallington

Sherrie Flynt Wallington, PhD, joined Lombardi in June 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Oncology and Program Director for Lombardi’s Health Disparities Initiative. Dr. Wallington’s research focuses on the role of health communications in reducing and eliminating cancer disparities among underserved populations. Specifically, her research has focused on reducing gaps in knowledge about tobacco use, HPV, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. “Just as the tobacco industry targets people to smoke, health professionals and researchers need to use these same strategies to counteract unhealthy behaviors,” she said. Experience in the communications fields along with a family history of cancer led to her interest in health communications and health disparities. She attended Howard University and received a doctorate in mass communication, specializing in health communication. She recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Harvard School of Public Health and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
