Capital Breast Care Center Hosts 5th Annual ‘Gift of Life’ Breakfast
March 1, 2012
The Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC) hosted its fifth annual signature fundraising event, the “Gift of Life” breakfast, on October 13, 2011 at the Grand Hyatt Washington. The event raised more than $120,000 towards supporting breast health and wellness for DC area women who might not otherwise have access to care. The breakfast brought together nearly 500 members of the community who gathered to celebrate and honor
those who have battled breast cancer.
This year, Felicia Knaul, PhD, director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative, delivered the keynote address. An advocate with cancer, Knaul has written extensively on breast cancer among low- and middle-income populations. Spurred to action by her 2007 breast cancer diagnosis, she founded the nonprofit foundation Cancer de Mama: Tomatelo a
Pecho to advocate for Latin American women in Mexico, encouraging early detection programs, research and awareness initiatives.
Representative Debbie Wasserman Shultz (D-Fla.) and Carol Kurzig, president of the Avon Foundation for Women, were also in attendance to share inspiring words. The Avon Foundation helped launch CBCC in 2004 with a $1-million gift. NBC4’s Angie Goff served as the mistress of ceremonies.
