National Cancer Institute Releases its Recommendations for Cancer Funding for 2012

The Nation's Investment in Cancer Research

April 11, 2011

The National Cancer Institute has released its Professional Judgment Budget for 2012. Titled "Cancer: Changing the Conversation," this document is prepared each year for the President and Congress to inform them of what the NCI deems to be the optimum funding needed to make the most rapid progress against cancer.

According to the NCI, the narrative accompanying the budget reflects on a 40-year history of investigation that has fostered profound changes — "a new conversation" — in our understanding of cancer.

"It is not a single battle against a single enemy. Instead, cancer represents a complex set of diseases that will require many different lines of investigation to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of those diseases. NCI-supported scientists and others have recently made significant progress against many forms of cancer, as illustrated in this year's narrative with examples from work on six kinds of cancer drawn from a much larger repertoire of successes," according to information disseminated by the NCI.

You can read or download a copy of "Cancer: Changing the Conversation" at http://plan.cancer.gov. NCI is also planning an expanded version of the narrative on the web with interviews and additional information.
