Georgetown University Medical Students Participate in the Lombardi Art Show

February 2, 2011

For the past several years, Georgetown medical students have held an annual student art exhibit at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The cancer center lobby features monthly art exhibits that welcome patients and families. For one month each year, students provide artwork for display with the aim of contributing to an environment of hope and healing. With the help of Nancy Morgan, the Director of the Arts and Humanities Program at Georgetown Lombardi, students have the privilege of sharing their artistic talents and supporting the Lombardi community.

There is a strong connection between the fine arts and medicine, and it is exciting to have it celebrated. Many of the values and skills honed through work in the fine arts – compassion, empathy, observation, coordination, precision, perspective – complement those which medical students strive to develop as future physicians. Ultimately, Georgetown student artists are passionate about events like the art show because they provide an opportunity to support patients, families, and medical staff of the Lombardi community.

This year, eight students have submitted works for display. The artwork is displayed for one month, and the show takes place in the Lombardi lobby from February 1st to the 28th. As in previous years, the works range greatly in style and media. Paintings in oil and acrylic, pen and ink drawings, and photographs are featured. Students have the option to sell their work with 20% of the proceeds benefiting the Lombardi Art Program. The students are thrilled to have the opportunity to share their work and support Georgetown Lombardi. Please stop by the Cancer Center lobby and take a look!
