Capital Breast Care Center will Host 4th Annual Gift of Life Breakfast

September 10, 2010

The Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC) will host their 4th annual signature fundraising event, the Gift of Life Breakfast, on October 7, 2010 at the Grand Hyatt Washington from 9-10am. The event brings together 500 business and civic leaders, government officials, breast cancer advocates and survivors to support the mission of the center. The center is thrilled to announce that Angie Goff, of WUSA9, will serve as the event emcee.

In 2003, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), a breast cancer survivor, delivered the keynote address for the 3rd annual Gift of Life Breakfast. She was joined by Senator Mary Landrieau (D-LA), who also made remarks. Michelle Cross Fenty, Esq, first lady of Washington, DC and President of the CBCC's Advisory Council, was joined by her husband Mayor Adrian Fenty in welcoming guests to the breakfast.

Guests were also treated to performances by the Grammy award winning a capella group Sweet Honey in the Rock.

The CBCC was founded in 2004 as a community initiative of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center through a generous grant from the Avon Foundation. The center is the only community-base breast cancer screening clinic in the DC metropolitan area that provides culturally appropriate screening and navigation services to women, regardless of their ability to pay.

The District of Columbia has one of the highest rates of breast cancer mortality in the nation. Women, especially low-income minority women, face many barriers to receiving breast cancer screening services and health education. Since opening their doors in 2004, the center has dramatically increased their screening rates and is detecting cancers at twice the national average.
