Lombardi Kicks Off with a Pre-Gala Celebration Drs. Subha Madhavan, Lucile Adams-Campbell, Claudine Isaacs and Shawna Willey of Lombardi

The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center kicked off a countdown to its annual fundraising Gala with a special reception to honor those who make the Gala possible—the committee members of the Lombardi Gala.

A reception was held on June 17 at the home of Darby and Monte Gingery in Potomac, Md., friends of Howard B. and Tanya Potter Adler, who are the co-chairs for this year’s Lombardi Gala. Nearly 100 guests attended the reception, including Gala Committee members and GUMC and Lombardi faculty.

Lombardi’s faculty and staff are dedicated to developing new treatments for all forms of cancer, discovering cancer risk factors, designing effective prevention strategies, and learning how to detect cancers earlier with the ultimate goal of eradicating cancer. Without funds raised from the Lombardi Gala, and the help of the Committee, many of these advances would not be possible.

“Tonight, we are surrounded by a terrific group of people,” said Tanya Potter Adler. “There are so many people dedicated to the Lombardi cause and we thank you for your time and energy you have put forth.”

Lombardi is the only comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, DC, area. Lombardi’s researchers are sixth in the world in the number of scientific publications on breast cancer, as reported by ESI Thomson Scientific.

“Lombardi is the major cancer center in this region,” said Louis Weiner, director of Lombardi. “I want to thank my 175 colleagues at Lombardi, faculty and staff at Georgetown University Medical Center and most of all—the Committee Members, for making Lombardi one of the best cancer centers.”

Special guests included Founding Director of Lombardi John Potter, Potter’s wife Tanya Potter, Louis Weiner, and his wife Harriet Weiner, as well as Lombardi scientists and clinicians Subha Madhavan, Claudine Isaacs, Lucile Adams-Campbell, Richard Schlegel, and Jeffrey Toretsky.

The next event will take place on Sept.24, when Lombardi will hold a Ralph Lauren Shopping Night to support the cancer center’s Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research.
